Highly moveable,
mesmerizing books

An ideal structure for book makers of any skill level, the flag book lends itself well to all manner of visual merriment – travel journal, photo album, ticket stub collector, or anything else that you like to save!  In this class, we will employ the flag book as a color wheel as we explore the versatility of SoHo Acrylics and Colored Pencils.  We will venture into surface design as we pattern our own papers to create the ‘flags’ for our books – this portion of the class will provide myriad techniques for using acrylics as water media.  Construction of the book form will reveal the true simplicity behind this magical structure!  As we build the book itself, we will see the ease with which this form can be modified to virtually ANY size.  Instructor will provide various materials for use as exhibited in technique demos, templates for cutting ‘flags’, a detailed handout, and “perfect palettes.”

Mixed Media Triptych
Sunday, June 29th – 10am – 4pm

Jerry’s Artarama, Raleigh, NC

Stretch out and get comfortable!  Let your vision e-x-p-a-n-d as we work across multiple substrates to create a vision in three parts.  In this class, we will explore the use of text and texture as unifying elements of collage in the triptych form.  Various techniques for adding texture will be demonstrated as we build layers of color and visual interest across three canvases.  Completion will yield 3 pieces of visually unified art that will ‘work’ as individual pieces, or as a single work comprised of 3 elements.  Various methods of connection will be discussed & displayed.  Instructor will provide a variety of materials for use as exhibited in technique demos, along with gesso (white & black), assorted collage materials, and a detailed handout.

This form offers endless possibilities!

Ophelia Staton
Pt. 1:  Build
Sunday, August 3rd – 10am – 1pm

Jerry’s Artarama, Raleigh, NC

We will team up with the incredible Ophelia Staton for a Big, 1-2 Combo*!  To begin the day, we will create an interactive art journal (folding flaps, perky pockets, and fly-outs)!  This versatile structure is based on the fabulously adaptable Stonehenge paper – 100% cotton, moulde made right here in the US!  Our book, with all its kinetic features, will be constructed from a single sheet of this luxuriant paper – marketed as a printmaking paper, but ideally suited to light washes, stamping, markers, pencils, and pen & ink work.  A nifty, two-color sewing adds strength as well as visual flair!  Instructor will provide awl, needles, assorted decorative papers for cover embellishment, and a detailed handout.

Non-Traditional Book Forms 101
Saturday, September
20th
– 10am – 4pm
Jerry’s Artarama, Raleigh, NC

When is a book more than a book?  In this instance, when it becomes something straight out of an M.C. Escher illustration!  We will explore the Spiral Fold form, and the many creative uses for it.  Strathmore 400 Series Drawing Paper will serve as the substrate, ideal for folding and working with ink and colored pencils for lettering.  Instructor will provide assorted adhesives, decorative paper for outer covers, template for lettering practice, and a detailed handout.
